It's happening too often for me to stick to the theory of 'mild food poisoning'. Darn it. I know quite well that the next step is some doctor wending a tube down my throat. I'm not quite desperate enough to resort to that. After three days of pain, Arn talked me into eating a piece of his candied ginger. It's not a flavor that I like but I did like that it seemed to help calm things enough that I could sleep... 14 hours, straight. He said that I barely even reacted whenever he came into the room. What a lazy butt I was! Missed the fighter's practice/chatting session and didn't go near the TV (Arn caught up on football) and was still asleep when he went to bed. My diet for the next few days will be chicken noodle soup and water. It seemed to help the last time this happened. After sleepy-headed internet cruising I've learned that a common refrain in most of the problems that have symptoms matching mine is 'this may be relieved by weight loss' so we'll see...
Spent part of my weekend answering questions about my Pennsic-job. Every year, a new 'sub-boss', every year the 'who are you? What is your office doing? Where do you fit into the scheme of things at Pennsic?" There are times when I think I ought to write up a one-size-fits-all FAQ for the Quartermaster's office. But then - I don't even have an SOP written up yet so that's gonna have to wait. Although I must say, this year was infinitely easier than any other year. I really love that trailer. And having buyers. Oh yeah.
I went driving all over town on Saturday looking for fabric to make a gown for a visitor to our area. Man, I'd forgotten how tough it is to find 'good fabric' for loaner gear. See, I told the lady I'd sew a gown for Gold Key that would fit her and if she liked it, she could reimburse me for the cost but if she didn't, she wasn't obligated - our loaner stuff needs outfits in her size, desperately, so it'll work out well no matter what. But since it's all coming out of my pocket, I admit, I wasn't going to buy linen and wool. And man, am I out of practise! Hancock's had a nice sale on patterns (99 cents for Simplicity), which I lucked into (including a 'dress' pattern that will give me a good guide for the top of her 'Italian renn' gown, since I will be sewing it 'blind') but no fabric. It also featured about 7 cop cars, 2 ambulances, one forensic vehicle and many clusters of sober-looking people at the flea market next door. I have no idea what was going on. When I left there, two blocks away there were about 5 cop cars all lined up along the median on Independence, lights a'rolling and a bunch of folks standing on the median... I don't know what was up with that, either. (Although I admit, I actually checked the news that night). Jo-Ann Fabrics had the stuff I'll use for the top of the gown but not the bottom, but I didn't mind because I found 7 yards of not-bad linen for $5 a yard. That was great! And - go figure - a fist-fight broke out at the Tex-Mex place next door, which the staff managed to keep in the parking lot. I tell you, I was seriously wondering what was going on... I went to two different Walmarts in the hope that their cheap velvet was 'in season' but it wasn't. While I was at the last one, the sound of men yelling obscenities and slamming things around was very clear in the fabric department - it turns out that the stock truck was in and that's _normal_ for the off-loaders. *sigh* I'm really spoiled. That whole online shopping/going to Fabric Hut thing has gotten me out of practice. Did I really used to go to that much trouble every time I needed to buy fabric? No wonder we all stockpile the stuff!
Well, that was interesting. In my previous entry, I'd asked "if heavy fighting in the SCA went away, would you quit?" and of the 19 respondents, 2 didn't really answer, 4 said "Absolutely" (I'm not counting one 'yes' because the person isn't in the SCA even though there is fighting) and 12 said something between, "probably not" and "hell, no". If we were to count my reply, that would make 13 in the 'nope' category. I can go all event without being near the fighting field - the only thing I like about the activity is that it makes my friends happy. For me, it's ho-hum... but then, I have serious doubts that for the average person living in the Middle Ages, 'fighting' would have been anything they were familiar with, even those who were ennobled did so rarely unless it was their vocation (pretty much as life is now, eh?).
I was curious because I've always been somewhat bemused by the supremacy of fighting as "what defines the SCA" in some people's minds and then, about two or three years ago, I saw the 'authorisation' list for my kingdom (which was the list totaling everyone authorised to be on the field; heavy, rapier, and waterbearers) and it was just barely over 500 names, while the kingdom newsletter, which we figure goes to an average of 2 persons per copy, numbered over 1500. And then, at Pennsic, our total numbers of attendees is around 11 - 12,000 while our field presence is less than 3000 heavy fighters. Perhaps we are more medieval than we think - didn't someone once figure that it took something like 25 or more non-fighters to 'support' one horsebacked warrior?
