No Honky-Honking
Jun. 6th, 2005 03:22 pmAh, the weekend....
First we loaded up stuff from the barony that had accumulated in our spare bedroom and garage and got it all in the truck. That was nice. We're sort of the dumping grounds for anyone on this side of the barony so we end up with all sorts of weird stuff that has to be sorted out and taken to it's "real" home. Then we went to a movie! Whoopie! Haven't done that since, um, December, I think. It was "Kingdom of Heaven", of course, that being the era of history Arn was most interested in. Not to mention that I'd read enough debate and reviews to be interested myself. My authenticity meter didn't blare big bell noises - occasional hiccups, but nothing that would take away from my enjoyment of the show. It was a nice, solid movie. Not something that I'd see again or own - but I own only about 3 movies I've bought on my own, so that shows how non-virtual _I_ am.
Saturday found us both awake and up at an ungodly early hour so we hopped into the truck and drove to North Carolina. I found myself thinking about the Not-ninja and the Samurai while we drove... it had to have been a difficult day and wouldn't you know it, I'd left my cell phone at home. Arn's phone didn't have any of their numbers! So anyway, we drove almost to Manteo so Arn could buy his cigarettes for less than Virginia allows... about 1/3 less, which surprised me. I wonder where all those tax revenues are going in our state? Then we drove the back roads and the weird "I know where we're going" roads that Arni loves so well. Me - I like getting lost at times but have to admit that when running errands, going from Point A to Point B by the swiftest route is what I prefer. In Arn's travelling comfort zone, at least one cow has to be spotted by the side of the road before we can find (much less get on) a highway. So it took about 40 minutes to get to the cigarette stand, 30 of aimlessly looking at all the cheap and funny stuff they think folks will buy, and then 3 hours to get back. But three hours looking at farm country and chatting with Arni is pretty nice. And we stopped for brunch/dinner late that afternoon, so that was good.
Sunday was our 28th anniversary. You know, I think we got married on a Sunday, now that I consider it. Might of been a Saturday, but I don't know for sure... Anyway, we didn't celebrate it with anything special. There was a workday/fighter's practise/cookout at the B&B's house and we went there. It was a grand group of folks, some new faces and some long-missed old ones. The weather was great (well, except I'm sunburned again and haven't stopped peeling from Sapphire!) so folks lingered until nightfall. A very pleasant day. Which ended with a couple of hours of TV and embroidery and then bedtime.
The whole weekend was a sharp contrast to the one before - no stress, no embarrassment (we camped in modern tents because we didn't have enough room or energy to deal with more than the bazaar stuff we were bringing for the fundraiser) and best of all - NO ALLERGY stuff. My Gods, how I hated Sapphire. Not the site - it was great. Not the weather - no rain during the most of it was amazing. But the pollen (or whatever it was) had me hacking and snivelling so bad that I couldn't sleep laying down and couldn't see half the time. My prescription meds didn't touch whatever was causing it. I even took over-the-counter stuff in addition to that, and still no relief. I don't really know if I will be attending next year. It will all depend on whether or not I can find something to do to keep me from being so miserable. The event itself, from all I saw, was great - I'm glad, but it does rather rub it in that there was something wrong with me that I couldn't actually participate! Ugh. My poor nose has almost recovered from all the Kleenex. (I am now a firm supporter of "Puffs" and their soft unscented tissues. My poor, poor abused nose... how I hurt it!)
So anyway, this weekend was nice. Very nice. I want more like it. Good times with da hubby, good friends, a sunny day and a potluck picnic. It was all good.
