A quiet weekend
Nov. 28th, 2005 12:04 amArn and I had a quiet weekend. Spent a lot of time lazing, ate out one night and got some holiday shopping done (in a store! Not just online!) and had friends over on Sunday. Later, I wrote one of those letters that are so hard to write. You know the kind, the "I'm sorry, but I will not allow you to abuse me any longer" kind that you know, absolutely, are going to generate a quick and emotion-packed response. There are times when I really regret that face-to-face talks are not possible... our world has gotten too wide, I guess, even as it's grown smaller. And I hate sweating over something that I know will only be spark to tinder, yet it needs to be done. I wish I were more polite, more compassionate, more able to turn the other cheek. No, wait. I wish I were better at saying unpleasant things in a way that might help a person see the impression they're making... letting them continue by being their doormat doesn't help them or me. But I don't think I'll ever enjoy having to ruin someone's game by telling them that their punching bag is no longer going to acceed to being hit.
Okay, so - I had this really quiet weekend. Read a lot of books (not Darkover, oddly, but Valdemar instead), none of which are non-fiction. That's a first for me. And I'm not feeling the hunger for one just yet. It's building though. By Weds., I'm sure I'll be at the book shelves looking for something to read with no plot lines and lots of footnotes.
Arn and I are talking about skipping the restaurant-trip for my b'day and just eating it take-out (Caraba's does take-out, Aldis and William taught me!) so we can kick back in our stockinged feet and watch TV. Tuesday is rapidly becoming our favorite TV day, thanks to "Bones", "House" and "Law & Order SVU"... I think, really, it's just an excuse to be lazy and we've gotten used to it. But I do get a lot of needlework done that way. Speaking of which, I get to start a new set. Magnus' white tunic is finished, that Christmas present I was crochetting is done, and Arni's knitted bag for his rune stones (with runic letters knitted in) is all done. So it's time to start... Mangus' other tunics. And repair Zack's quilt so it will be ready for him to take home at Christmas time.
I'm supposed to be coming up with a menu for Barnacled Bullfrog, too. Wish I could. There's too many possibilities and too much I'd like to play with. I'm letting it simmer in the back of my mind for now - that's a technique I learned during college. Read everything I can get my hands on about whatever it is, let it simmer, and then sit down when I feel it's time and bam! Everything written quickly, logically, and completely. Try to rush it, and the results are pret-ty ugly. Heh. I still grin over my English profs. They kept holding up my papers and those darn outlines as examples of "how to do it well - flows well, builds well, and is highly logical" and I'd have to tell them (privately) that I'd never written the outline before the paper, nor the "pre-work" paper, either, but created those after I wrote my final paper - all in one draft. Oh, once in a while I'd shift a sentence or paragraph, but for the most part, it was all done in one setting. But only after it had simmered for a while in the back of my brain. Do other people do that?
