What a great day
May. 14th, 2006 01:57 amFirst, I slept in. That was nice. Then I turned off the alarm clock, reset it for an hour later but woke up refreshed just 15 minutes after the original 'ding' - so I got up feeling really virtuous for absolutely no reason except I was up 'early'. I called a local friend who was (maybe) going to go to a celebration with me later that day and made myself late for the celebration by spending too much time on the phone listening to her tell me all about the various birds that are living on/around her yard. Then she hung up to go Grass-carting and I sped through a shower to fly out the door for the (wonderful) celebration of kat's graduating from college... another brave soul out to educate our youth. (braver than I, that's for _sure_!)
Cool party, even if I did leave my contribution at home in my rush. Too much SCA talk but it was worth it to see someone I'd not seen in years light up and have good stories to tell about her time in the Society. I met the Fabled Wife (and she's really pretty, too) and watched one friend turn beet red as the Person of Honor scored a good verbal hit. Heh. Then watched her go all mushy when he got her back with a great gift (pre-paid reservation to Pennsic!). The sunset through the trees and reflected on the water beyond was worth the bug bites as we finally left the picnic shelter.
Came home by way of Shawn's workplace but first got a phone call on my cell phone while I was approaching the tunnel - another friend I hadn't seen in quite a while was behind me and had laughed when she read my license plate and recognised me, then laughed again when I said, "Hey! You must be the little slow white car in my lane!" (I'd had to pass her on the right since she was slowing down traffic.) She was driving her new hybrid car and wasn't used to where the speedometer was so she kept forgetting to watch it!
Drove up to my home and heard music playing from 'across the fence'. The apartment complex on the other side of my neighbor's yard (we're in a cul-de-sac) was hosting a party and there was good music as a medium-loud level while children were racing and laughing around the seated adults. Checked my mail, found a gift from a friend on his way to the Gulf of Iraq and another one from a very kind man down in NC... I don't deserve either one, frankly, but I'm not giving them back... one was a spoon carved by Geva. I cried. And I stuffed it and the note back into the envelope to share with Arni when he gets home from Hero's Portion tomorrow.
Then dinner with my Shawn-boy, a stroll through the 24-hour WalMart - ppssssttt! Perry! There were Coleman crockpots in the sporting goods section for $54! and now I'm home catching up on email.
Today was grand.
[edit: To Rhiannon, Magnus, and Izzy... So I finally get around to reading the back-messages in the Viking Norsefolk email List and what do I find? http://www.tjurslakter.nl/vikingbroeken.pdf *sigh* Sorry about that!]
