"Promissory": do I care?
Jun. 19th, 2007 05:36 pmDo I care if a particular piece of gorgeous art documenting a SCA award/position that I have been given is called a scroll or a promissory scroll? Hell, no.
It's art. It's proof I can hold in my hand and hang on my wall (should I be that sort of person) to document a day, a set of Royals or baronage, and the honor they've given me.
If a herald likes it or not, I don't really care. If it has a different descriptor in one kingdom than it has in another, I don't really care. As long as I can contact the Clerk of The Signet and say "please take my name off of the scroll-needed list", then what the "title" of that particular form of art is - is nothing that I give a flying leap about. It's ART, people!
And personally, if'n it ain't in our current set of Copora and guidelines, then it ain't 'law' anymore, either. THE Great Dark Horde isn't recognised by Copora any longer - am I crying about it? No. The requirements for Peerage changed after I became one (and I don't actually fit them any longer) - THAT I care about. What some body of folks choose to call the document that says, "Hrothny was given a cool thing today" is so nit-picky stupid that it astounds me that folks would quit the SCA, the kingdom, or their art over it.
When it comes right down to it, the only folks who matter in the exchange of such a gift are the giver(s) [and by that I mean the artist and the throne-sitters who give the award] and the recipient who will keep the document. It's not like a copy of it is going into someone's heraldic records!
And yeah, I am well aware that my friends who are higher-ranking dedicated Heralds in the SCA are probably frothing right now. Sorry about that. But passion for one's art shouldn't cause this sort of strife.
