Back at that Bread Place...
Jul. 25th, 2007 08:26 pmChecking on orders (there weren't any) and now, at 8:30, I'm headed back to the store to fill more pre-orders before I get back to my office for the paperwork. Don't worry - I'm not working too hard, I'm just playing catch-up. The guy who put in my shelves and is going to build a stand for my air conditioner (in the trailer! NOT my tent! Sheesh...) is a union carpenter. So yeah, the space wasn't usable until late this afternoon.
the weather continues fine. There is rain but only enough to keep the dust down. It's still in the mid-70s during the day and the mid-50s during the night. just right for wool blankies. :)
Tomorrow morning I get to go visit an insurance adjuster. Yup, got in an accident. Was front-ended by an owl.
Yes, an owl.
Silly bird snatched itself a raven (there was a rook of them in the trees along the west-bound side of 422) and it wasn't strong enough to fly far with it's dinner. So it dropped to the road and then decided that trying to dine in the middle of the east-bound lanes wasn't a smart idea. So it tried to take back off with its prize. I drove up as it achieved about 4 feet - we stared straight at eachother just before it hit the front of my car, slide up the hood over the engine, and smacked - hard - my windshield. Scared me to death. There is a really interesting 'dust' pattern on the window in the shape of a bird and two long scratches all the way up the middle of my hood where it has cut through to the primer. I suspect that the large scratch was from its beak but there's no telling, really.
And the raven put a slight dent in the front of my car...
I have no witnesses or anything. I feel almost silly claiming it but our staff-week cook tells me that it's going to be about $1000 to re-paint the hood, so -- off I go to tell my story about playing chicken with an owl.
And the next day, I got a rock in my braking system on the right passenger side and squealed and squeaked for a block before I figured out that the horrendous noise was coming from my car. The motorpool guys left off working on the golf carts and came and rescued me, with the help of John van der Velt. *sigh* I don't even want to think of what it would have been like to drive all the way to Butler's Midas car shop with that nails-on-the-blackboard squealing coming from my car. Or the damage to the rotor that would have resulted.
So those of you who are coming - drive safely. Avoid owls (I wounder who didn't get their mail at Hogwarts because of me?). Ice in town is $3.16 for 22-pound bags. Sodas at Cooper's Store at $1.50 for 20oz. Gas is running $2.89 a gallon. All the regular stores are still here.
EDIT: Olwyn says to say "hi" to everyone on LJ. She's smiling a lot. Rowan is here and safely set up (and is healing from her ear/sinus infection), Tirloch and Anne were getting sunburnt setting up their camp so they could get the Troll Booth ready. Vorlin is here. Ro, Subotai and JP have all been buying supplies for my department and helping Olwyn (as are Cip and Loriage). It's gonna be a good War.
