Mystery solved
Sep. 8th, 2007 02:25 pmOur neighbor who is never home has a built-in bar-b-que in his yard, the back of which faces our yard. There is no fence between us. His bar-b-que has a sheet metal backing behind the actual fire pit (don't ask me why). The configuration of our houses makes a small 'cul de sac' of about 10 or 12 feet square right where all of that is.
And that would be where Arni found a good 30 or so BIG firecracker rocket casings this morning. Along with some massive scorch marks on our neighbor's metal sheet/bar-b-que backing. Looks like kids were setting off rocket fircrackers to hit against the metal and then bounce against our fireplace bricks before they reached real air. Which is kinda smart, really, as an experiment in math and propulsion. I'm not so thrilled about the possibilities of it though.
It explains the odd reverberations of the explosions and the metallic sounds. And if I hadn't been such a chicken, I'd wager that turning on the house lights would have prevented a repeat of their 'experiment' later that night, once they realised that someone was actually in one of the houses.
