In search of Spice Jars
Nov. 14th, 2007 11:33 pmYears ago while I was away for the weekend, the [jokers] guys in my house helpfully relabeled my spice and food coloring jars to better fit what they thought should be in a Witch's kitchen. Yes, I came home to find the blue food coloring labeled "dehydrated water", the bay leaves "Bat Wings", the cloves "Eye of Newt" and so on... over the years, I've grown to love the labels - sometimes more than the jokers* - but now the mis-mash of commercial containers are getting tired and sad-looking after years of me re-filling them in order to keep the ones with the labels. Not to mention that I get depressed picking up "Basilisk Breath" (garlic powder) and seeing the original price tag of 82 cents. So I thought I'd buy nice, uniform jars that I can label myself with the real names (sometimes maddeningly obscured by the "new" label) along with a larger-print copy of the joke name.
Except that I can't find any jars I like. I found some nice 4 ounce ones that were colored, which since they're all kept in the dark won't be necessary but would be pretty, but I get to choose between green, red, and cobalt blue - none of which go well with the rest of my cooking stuff. Clear glass ones are okay but seem to only have steel screw on lids or red plastic ones. No amber is making its way to my search engine, no pretty shapes, either. And, I admit, this is a small change and a silly one - to pay darn near $3 a jar before even the s/h just doesn't trip my trigger.
So I'm thinking - how bad would it be to buy a cheap-o 'holiday gift' spice rack from some store and toss the rack in order to save the jars? I only need 16 of the little buggers. The spice rack that Arn gave me before we even got married, which looks like a still life painting and opens up to show the spice rack against the wall while the back of the painting features a chart for spicing food (like a times-table chart, with spices down one side and types of dishes along the top) is kinda small but I love that rack and want to keep it. (Not to mention that I use that little chart a lot.)
So would it be horribly wasteful to buy something already planning on tossing half of it? What I really want is some coo-oo-ol pretty jars that don't cost as much as the spices I buy to put in them.
*Not really.
