Most of you who read my blog know that I do some heavy volunteer work at Pennsic every year being the Staff Quartermaster. For the last two years, I've taken my personal laptop to the event in order to track and report the purchases (horray for "Excel"), print out the daily shopping list and create receipts (horray for "Word") and use the wireless feature to check the internet for messages, orders, and to locate sources for needed equipment (horray for Panara Bread Factory in Butler).

So.

I can't keep bringing my laptop to the event - it's kinda hard on the machine, dust-wise, and that machine is the only computer I own. So I get a little ancey about taking it out to a tent-farm for three weeks.

Every year, I ask for a computer for the office. Every year, I get told "it's just not in the budget" - and I respect that, because I've seen the budget and it really can't be stretched any tighter than it already is. But that leaves me with a problem. I need to figure out how to get a laptop/notebook for the Quartermaster's office by this summer, something that can be handed down to my successor... I considered doing a fund-raiser sort of thing but feel a bit odd about doing that in Atlantia for equipment that will belong to the Midrealm/EastRealm/Aethelmerc/Whoever ultimately "owns" Pennsic equipment. And truthfully, I'm not really ready to organise a fundraiser sort of thing with what I've already got on my plate.

I thought about donning a suit and knocking on company doors looking for a donation to a "non-profit educational" organisation (I can even get a receipt for the donation) but I am a horrible solicitor when it comes to getting anything that might benefit me - and this does, according to my sense of fairplay, so there goes that idea.

My protegee Donovan offered his "old" laptop but after he had Circuit City wipe the hard-drive so it'd be nice and pristine, they told him that there was a password missing and what he ended up with was a chuck of circuitry that was unusable. So that was scrubbed...

All I need is a basic portable computer that can handle Word, Excel, and MS XP. Surely, someone out there knows a 'puter-geek who upgrades every few cycles and has an old "too slow for my video games" machine that they'd be willing to donate or sell cheap (since I'll have to pay for it myself). Surely? Maybe?

Or, well, got any suggestions?

I've sent my thoughts about Logan's proposed Kingdom Law change to Their Majesties and Their Highnesses.

Please the Gods, it will make a difference.
