Roll Top expense keeps on rolling
Dec. 22nd, 2009 09:03 pmSo. We volunteered to store the baronial library. That involved moving desks around and consolidating them, which meant that I lost the table I was using as a desk and started using our rolltop desk instead. Don't get me wrong - I love the rolltop and have always wanted one, love seeing it. It's about 5 feet tall and about that wide, teakwood stained dark mahogany with a beautiful marble writing slab in the center and cool decorative inlays creating stars on each side of the writing surface. It has little drawers, pidgeon holes, funny little shelves and the bottom side drawers are two different sizes of file cabinets.
But man, converting it to modern use is expensive. Three bottles of oil (it's good that we did the swap because I didn't realise it needed that much oiling), two sets of 'drawer organisers' for the center drawer (wooden, thus $25 a pop), a desk-top light ($35) and now a laptop cooler ($30) because I can no longer use my laptop stand and full-sized keyboard. There's no room for them on the desk.
That's $115 so far and I still need to get a new mousepad & something to keep my beverage from damaging the desk surface.
Wow.
Oh, and I spent $3 on a picture frame because while cleaning out the desk I found my two absolute favorite school pictures of our sons. But that was a cheery bonus. :)
