Nov. 21st, 2010 06:25 amYesterday was lovely, especially seeing
tedeisenstein for the whole day. And everyone else, too. I was bouncy-excited about finding hand-carved cherry-wood cooking spoons of the correct size and style for Viking-era York. It was wonderful to watch the artisan as he crafted another spoon, there by his booth, with naught but a big stump, a (correct-to-period) hand axe, and some wooden-handled iron carving tools he pulled out of his carpenter's box. What was even more fun was watching the children as they watched him.
I spent more money than I'd planned on and feel like I have an embarassment of riches. Picked up a couple of Twelfthnight gifts and am hugging those to myself.
melaniesuzanne surprised me with a set of salt & pepper shakers that I feel sure will make me giggle at least once this Thanksgiving and Giftmas. Although I think her husband is a wuss for not agreeing to have a set himself. (Just kidding, Edward!)
I didn't spend hardly anyt time with
mmcnealy, who looked very busy down at the booth she was sharing with Iohanna &
salviati, but I don't think she missed me - it was a nice gathering of artisans-cum-merchants and I think a whole lot more of chatting and visiting was going on than of straight shopping.
It was nice to be able to commenserate with certain friends about medical woes and the toll that they take on a person's pysche. It was also nice to be able to dismiss the subject and talk about all sorts of other things. I was very glad that I was asked to attend the Queen's Tea, since Watkin of Kent was there, playing his mandolin(?) and thus it was that I got a ring-side seat when Her Majesty made him a Baron of their Court. I totally missed Gwen's setting-of-vigil and elevation. I was always at the wrong end of the event.
It was warm. That was so - - wrong. Who come prepared for 'comfortably warm' at Holiday Faire? Wool socks and long johns are the norm. Thank goodness a person can shed some of those to achieve comfort!
I have new books to read. Oh thank goodness. The great Read Romancy Romance task will have some levening for the nounce, as I'm not going to set the new books aside. And truthfully, I'm getting very tired of reading the romance books. (I was given seven boxes of the things and have been winnowing them down in an attempt to get to the 'keepers'. So far, I'm down to one industrial-storage shelf packed full of them with a paper bag off to the side - that's a lot of winnowing! But I think I need to take a break.
We were talking about getting a bread machine for ourselves. What are your thoughts on those? We hardly eat bread anymore and the 'regular' sized loaves are too big - I end up putting half in the freezer each time we open a new loaf, just so it won't mold before we get to it. And Bossman is really getting into 'artisan breads', so it seems as though it's time to get back into baking them - but I'm too lazy to do that. Besides, I don't know how to make just one loaf at a time!
