Jan. 27th, 2012 01:52 pmLast night I was talking to Catalina and I said, "
arnbiorn is the most upright man I know." - and the words jarred me a bit, because in that instant I realised that it was completely and utterly true. I have watched him pass up 'opportunities' to do something vengeful, or pissy (if you will) on so many occassions over the course of the thirty-five years I've known him, and for the most part, the idea that he could do something like that just passes him by. When it has occurred to him, he just shakes his head in negation and goes on doing what is right. Yeah, he has a temper, and it sparks hot and scary - but he doesn't play less than fair.
That says a lot.
And
medievalbooks - Do you know how I met her, since she lives in the Boston area and I live in Virginia? She was constantly sitting in the Pennsic Troll Booth, working the off hours 'because I noticed that you didn't have anyone signed up'. Not out partying, not laying in her tent reading a book - working. Over the years, I've watched her get gut-punched with Luekemia, go through the treatment for it, and not give up. Damn - the woman came to Pennsic bald as an egg and set up her merchant booth of books... because to give up and curl in a ball was just not her way.
I admire
mariedeblois. When I first met her, she had picked up and moved across the country to be with her love. She knew when she made the decision that it would cost her in SCA terms - she was moving to a new kingdom and as close as her service may have brought her towards being recognised as a Pelican, she willingly left to start all over beside him. That, as those who play deeply in our hobby know, is not easy. It's hard enough to gamble your heart, and your security, but to gamble with your dedicated bliss (as in Joseph Campbell's 'follow your bliss' model) is tough. But she did it, and she's finding her way in a new land. I barely know her, yet she has been willing to reach out a helping hand to me any time I've asked for it. That isn't easy to do for a stranger. I admire that.
This post was brought to you by
mistressrhi, who challenged her friends on Facebook to say something nice about someone today. So I randomly picked three names in my friend's list. (Bossman just drew the 'lucky' straw.) I'd say something nice about her but I don't want her to think I was getting smarmy. Although I do admire the way she can keep that cool exterior when folks are being idjuts.
