stitchwhich: (Lego Viking Woman)
The problem with sleeplessness is that it can lead to dark thoughts... and the advent of an election year only makes it worse.

I dreamt again about the little girl who was in the news when I was in Middle School in Portland, Ore. She was nine years old, brutally raped - and she was afraid to tell anyone about it, afraid that she'd be in trouble, so it was two weeks before her parents learned what had happened to her. At the time, Oregon law allowed abortions only in the case of rape (or medical emergency, I think) if they were reported within one week. She was past the deadline. And after consulting a group of doctors, it was determined by the authorities that carrying the child to term *was not impossible for this child*, so she was forced to drop out of school and continue her pregnancy, deliver, and (I believe) give the baby up for adoption. Nine. Years. Old.

And we're heading there again. Oh, not for the Mrs. Romney's of the world - they are rich enough to jet off to another country and have a second abortion if they feel they need one, but for the regular, normal American woman? It will be impossible.

How soon, do you think, will Humanitarian Asylum be granted by other countries to American women on the grounds of non-Christian faith, or physical beauty (in danger of rape), or 'physical risk' because they cannot carry a child safely to term?

You think I'm being cynical? Better listen to the rhetoric again.
