Oh, I have plans, I do.

The first weekend of October, at Atlantian Coronation (if the Autocrat replies to the messages I've sent her requesting booth space), I'll be running a 'food vendor' booth on behalf of my barony, to raise money for a new baronial pavilion. Our plan is to cook & sell 'lumpia' which are little crisp Philippine egg rolls. Picture a Chinese egg roll made with philo pastry, sort of. The outside is a very thin dough which gives each roll a delightful crunchiness. We'll be making four meat types of them; beef, pork, ham, and chicken. Medieval? Not very. I have a recipe written for Kublai Khan by his court physician which seems to be a higher-status version of lumpia but that is the closest I can come to it being medieval in any way. I'm okay with that. In this heavily-military community (lots of active duty and retired military folks), lumpia is an old favourite and is difficult to find unless you make it yourself. So this will be a one-time treat. We are also taking advance orders for batches of it to be taken home uncooked - those will be brought to the event in coolers using dry ice so they will stay frozen through the day and make it home to the buyer's house without losing integrity. So in the next few weeks I'll be doing a lot of cooking and rolling.

The second weekend of October is the event "War of the Wings", which I would have been skipping had my Irgun not decided to attempt a Great Dark Horde camp at it this year. We are driving down in support of that. To tell you the truth, I don't care for the event much. The site is planted with corn during the summer and is used for a 'corn maze' in the fall, then the camping areas are rough-mown just prior to the event. Camping with thick and rigid corn stalks cut off at heights of 3-6 inches does not make for comfortable tenting. Our home barony has a lovely couple who are now ex-pats living about an hour from the site - last year they went early with their riding mower and mowed the barony's area... that was wonderful! We won't have that luxury this year. ANd the only potable water onsite is located at the furthest edge of the site itself. There was a hose supposedly run towards the other end of the site last year but no one on staff could tell me where it was or even locate it themselves when I asked for aid. Lack of water is a difficult thing to deal with - I hate having to lug in gallons and gallons of it in order to support our meal plan, just as I hate the other option of getting our truck out of parking in order to make a water run down to the farm house to fill up our water coolers. Either way, it is very inconvenient. Were it just Bossman and I eating, it wouldn't be so much of a problem. But when I'm serving more than two, and dealing with the washing up, then it is a hassle. This year I'm going to pre-cook the main dishes and store them in boil-a-bags so I can cut down on dirty pots. And I guess I'm going to cave in and use paper plates. I HATE those at events! At least I can feed them to the fire, I suppose.

After WoW, all my energy will be focussed on sewing enough children's clothing to stock the booth I'll have at Holiday Faire just before Thanksgiving. It is my attempt at earning funds towards our own needed replacement pavilion. Bossman & I want a 16x16, one of the square shaped ones that does not need a ridgepole. That will make setting up so much easier! It is my goal to have it purchased before next Pennsic.

And somewhere in the next few weeks we'll be going through the process of refinancing our house, which should clear our budget well enough to allow us to purchase a new car and to finish the two bathrooms. Assuming that the Credit Union's financial committee will approve the deal since the bathrooms are partially-finished right now. The loan officer tells me that isn't normal and will require permission before the assessor sees the house. Thankfully everything else is in fine shape.
