Dec. 1st, 2013 06:46 amI recently re-read Heinlein's "Friday" and (again) found myself irritated by the overtly demeaning depiction of the protagonist. Even though I was well aware of the cultural norms at the time when he was writing the novel (back then, it would have been quite liberal in its depiction of an independent female). So I decided I'd cleanse my reader's palate by re-reading something else I loved. It'd been a long while since I'd read "Dear and Glorious Physician"... big mistake. I am even MORE disgusted by the slamming of my gender in that one. And the author is a woman! (But again, a woman of her times.)
Boy, have things changed over the years since those were penned.
