MTA was great! Got off to a bad start - I was there before anyone from my hosting group and foolishly thought I'd save time by carrying all my stuff from the parking lot to the marked camping area. Lugging huge chests of awkward size took a little more huffing and puffing than I expected and the abused lungs let me know that they were not happy with me. But I count it a good thing as I'm sure I coughed the last of the pnemonia out of there while sitting on a bench resting. I tried to help at the Anglo-Saxon site (our neighbors-to-be) but got barked at and realised I was only making their hurried preparations worse. But it was grand to finally see Atli after three years or longer.

We didn't end up camping where we were originally assigned so I had to lug my stuff up to the area right next to the fort. I tell you, when I learned that after waiting over an hour in the cold for my hosts, I was ready to leave. But Eadric was walking to his shop and it was on the way so... he cheered me right up. And once I got my stuff into camp and was able to help them set up (they were FAR behind on unpacking), all was grand.

Cold, that first day. Morning set up wasn't bad - the sun was shining and it was heating up but as the clouds rolled in and the wind built up, it was a bit colder than 'brisk' and I was blessing my wool. A young couple who were in our camp still sewing their costumes (sitting in their linen!) were looking so sad with sheepskins wrapped over their shoulders that I lent them my shawl and coat, the only extra layers I'd brought. Although it did made me grin to see the wife in my shawl and the husband in my coat. But she had two layers and he only had the one.

The surprise snow/frozen water fall was kinda neat. It didn't really do much - too low in volume and too short but it gave us all a fine topic of conversation.

Saw lots of friends, got to chat almost as much as I would have at a SCA event. Admired a lot of garb they'd made and heard stories about New Orleans that made me smile. Bought pottery from Eadric (Yeah!). Learned that Smoke and Fire weren't there and are never coming back (sigh) so more of my money went home with me than I'd originally planned.

My hosts set a marvelous spread and wouldn't let us contribute toward the cost so I bought the organiser, who was the cook, a 'measuring cup' from Eadric and she loved it. It holds one cup and will be wonderful for proportion cooking.

What can I say? I had a great time. And doing a demo where I could drive home, sleep in a warm waterbed and get extra layers of clothing for Day Two was kickingly spectacular. So much so that I gave the poor freezing wife my Viking coat... I needed to make a new one anyway and now this will spur me on to do so. (And I've got to remember to email her the documentation for the black and red fabric.)
