Gearing up

Last night I started sorting the equipment I need for my kitchen at Pennsic. In previous years I've packed far more than I needed, mostly to avoid arguments with Da Arni, who worried that I wouldn't be well-taken care of once I was there "alone". This year, because I really, really, really want to have enough room in my SUV to bring our new folding table I am cutting out the gross as much as I can. And that means going through the mindless "bring that box every year" to sort out what I've never used from inside that(those) box(es) in all those years.

I am still kicking around the idea of camping with my barony next year. The meal plan is one of the best at the War - $6 for all you can eat, three meals a day, and you only have to cook one dinner and clean up after a dinner... the 'camp mommy' does the every-third-day town runs. It's about the most lazy meal plan there can be. It is, of course, patterned directly from the Rowanwald meal plan of old. The one I used to run. :) But then, that makes sense - we didn't have a baronial campsite until I started one and back then, Rowanwald was the biggest household in the barony after the Bedfords - and they camped in their own camp. Again this year, I've heard some folks trot out the old "I can cook cheaper than that" line - it's the same every year. And of course, it's always people who have never been to Pennsic and have never camped for weeks on end under those conditions. It'd make me sigh if I didn't know it's just ignorance talking - there's only one person I know who is a repeat camper in our group who doesn't buy in to the meal plan - and she eats out of cans. But (and there's always a "but") I love my little kitchen. A lot. And since I've had it, I haven't really been able to use it much. So if I do camp with the barony next year, I think I really want to bring it and use it. I like cooking in my own widdle-bitty kitchen! I'm a boring eater, not a gourmand, and it's the one time in a year when I can suit myself every single day. But it seems silly to bring the kitchen for only one person - Arn sure as heck isn't gonna give up the barony's meal plan. Not with those good cooks!

So. I'm off to the Dollar Tree to make sure that I have enough clothes pins for my dishtowels (I swear someone should start a Clothespin Sharing Program because you can't buy just 10 pins and how many does one small kitchen need?) then it's the gym, after a 3-day hiatus (ugh), then home again to the Arni who will be wood-wrestling my new chair into shape.

12 days until I'm unloading my vehicle and trying to figure out how to set my tent up by myself. My goodness, I haven't even looked at my garb. Although I'm not too worried - what I've got worked well last year. In fact, I brought clothes I never even unfolded. (And yeah, they won't be coming this year. Cut down, cut down, cut down.)
