Well I've just done something I haven't done in years. Called 911. See, I'm home alone and was in bed re-reading the Dragonriders of Pern books (thanks to a certain new apprentice and her LJ entry!) and suddenly, from what seems to be right beside my head, I hear a rat-a-tat of metallic bangs. About what you'd hear from a semi-automatic doing a short burst. (And yeah, thanks to some Life Experiences, I know the sound). For a moment, I froze. And then decided to hug the ground and bring my phone down with me. And call 911. Just in case it happened again, doncha know.

The cops came - it was nothing. No reports of the noise anywhere else in my neighborhood. Flase alarm and all that. So now that my adrenaline is in full throttle, I'm going to play a fast-paced computer game until my inner self understands that it really was a false alarm and no bullets are going to go cruising through my walls.

Although I do wish I had some idea of what the noise was. Since Gang kids cut through our backyard (which corner is where the bedroom is) and have already done some nasty things to my back-yard neighbor, I wish the police had found a big can and a stick, or something, so I could label it 'solved' and go on. Because my memory of hte noise is just too much like something dire and deadly - and that makes it hard to relax again. I want to think I mistook the sound. I have to think I mistook the sound. I was drowsy and not paying attention. Yeah.

Edit: It happened again, an hour later, twice in succession. THe police are now telling me to stay in the house (as if I'd leave!) and to leave the lights off - and stay away from windows. I wasn't the only one after all who called in and apparently the sound was captured over the phone during the last spate of it...
