The weekend started out great. I hopped in my (new to me) SVU to drive to Richmond and hang out with my sees-ter. A small moment of consternation was experienced as I filled my vehicle's gas tank up and did my first-ever calculation of gas mileage for this car. Oye. 13 miles to the gallon. That's *half* of what my previous car got. The good news is that I've just re-filled it after my trip and with highway driving, the average goes up to 19 miles to the gallon. i guess that counts as "good news". Still, if you're thinking about a Ford Explorer, be aware...

Hanging out with a talented woman is invigorating. I talked too much, as is my wont, and laughed a lot, and loved looking at all the incredible things Maggie had made/drawn/photoed/ well, DID, artistically. Then we book-geeked, then the next day went to an art show in the morning and to a Manx Camp work day in the afternoon. It was all good. More book geeking, talking, eating followed that and then I got this incredible urge to go home - even though I could have happily stayed longer. The last time I got that kind of niggling urge, we came home to a phone call from a jail cell (warning to folks: don't ignore traffic tickets).

It's good that I came home. Everything was fine and I went to bed feeling foolish. Arn was out visiting and then at about 1:30 at night, we had the tail end of Ophelia (I'm guessing) come through with some really strong wind gusts and rain blowing sideways. As I was laying in my bed listening to it, I noticed a strange sliding/shuffling noise coming from outside, as if someone was pressed up against the siding of the house and was trying to make snow angels out there. Just when I was getting ready to get up and look, there was a boom - something hard and heavy hit the corner of the house. It turns out that we've lost part of the siding and the long metal brackets that hold it to the top of the house on the back. Had I not been home and heard the noise, it's doubtful that Arn and I would have noticed it for quite a while. He doesn't sleep on the waterbed anymore so is in the front of the house at night. It was on the part of the house that's in the very back and we only go there to mow the lawn. Occasionally I may drive down the side street where the house is visible from the right angle, but otherwise, we never look at the back of the house. The damage is minor but we're on it now instead of finding out about it oh, Thursday or so.

So I guess it's good that I came home. I'm also glad that the niggling feeling wasn't for anything *really* bad. The damage is so light that with the aid of a 25 foot ladder and a hammer & nails, I could fix it myself. (But I won't. We had that siding installed just 14 months ago. There's no excuse for it falling off the house like that!)

I visited my Seester. And it was great.
