When is it appropriate to shout to the world, "That is one thing we pretty much know they didn't do!" when you hear about embroidery projects?

*sigh*

This is where we suffer from the ease of the Internet, from quick and easy finds of websites featuring beautiful work that isn't correct to period...

Friends, family, we know that embroidered items were a part of the Norse(Viking) culture. In some cases, we can even figure out what item of clothing was embroidered - cloaks, for example. In other cases, we don't have any extant pices of the clothing to look at (women's gowns - although I exclude the (probably imported) Dalmatics from the Oseburg find) and in some cases, we DO have quite a few examples.... like "Viking coifs" or headcovers for women (we're assuming they are for women). None of the examples was embroidered save for a tiny band of stitching along a front edge. Yet thanks to examples found on the Internet, I'm seeing more and more of them at events.

I wanna have a temper tantrum. At the person who started it...
