I have just been reminded why I stopped doing heraldry just after we joined the SCA... because my husband got into it and we had numerous raised-emotion discussions over the subject.

Today is one of those days where I regret my SCA job - but only because he's getting interested again and has resumed telling me how it "ought to be done". I can no longer vent anywhere near him, or even just say something like, "I just spent an hour online looking for examples of something I didn't really need to look for, just because I got all fascinated by a side item on the Letter of Decision I was working on. Isn't that silly?"

Because that way lies more of Mr. Expert telling me stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with the way we are currently doing heraldry - and yelling at me when I argue with him.

Grrrrrr...

(Sorry, needed to vent a moment someplace where it won't really affect him. The only people who read my blog here are women and I *know* you'll understand the occasional spark of annoyance is only a spark!)

Grrrrrrr!

I hate I R Expert who wants to yammer about How To Do It Right And You All Are Doing It Wrong (Wrong, I Say!).

When it comes to SCA heraldry vs real world heraldry and how we could be doing it "right", particularly with armory, I usually take the tack that the SCA, like every different kingdom (and in some cases, time period) in the real world, has settled on it's own standards as an independent heraldic jurisdiction. That means we're not entirely congruent with any one period heraldic jurisdiction (or modern!), and THAT'S OK. If we had to pick one period heraldic jurisdiction to recreate, which one would it be? Who are we going to tell "You want heraldry that's really authentic for your persona, but you aren't [1400s English|1500s French|etc]? Tough noogies! Come back when you're English!"? Because, well, we *aren't* a re-enactment group (we'd have to narrow our focus, for one!), but we've started caring about historical accuracy a little and let's not discourage that, eh?

The other tack I take on that topic (again, mostly with armory), is to say "Well, we could do the really period (at least, English period) thing ... where the heralds pick your armory for you. How'd that work for you?" Seriously - it used to be that the King would say "Hey, X, you're cool, you should have arms. HERALD! Give this guy some arms!" In fact, that's *still* how it works in England - you get some input, but the heralds are the ones who pick your arms. I think it would be a hilaaaaaariously bad idea to replicate that, but the idea does usually derail Expurts.

The rest, well, step one is education and making knowledge more available. Step zero is getting people interested in authenticity, and well, we know how that goes?

Er. Sorry. I has a button and it went off.

Anyway.

You're welcome to vent to me any time. I've got a phone and I'm on IM almost all the time.

If you can't bitch here, where can you bitch? I totally understand needing to take a moment to explode utterly, just so you can get on with what you were trying to do before you got ticked off. I also totally understand Just Not Discussing certain things because you really don't want to hear what the other party has to say.

"Because that way lies more of Mr. Expert telling me stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with the way we are currently doing heraldry - and yelling at me when I argue with him."

...and he's not the kind to just take a "yes, Dear *smile and nod in false agreement*", is he, even if you were the kind to do that. Maybe you could tell him something like, "That's very interesting. Would you like to research and write up a proposal to Laurel and the College of Heralds for a rules change? In the meantime, I need to follow our current rules and procedures because doing otherwise compromises my honor; can you help me stick to that even when your way makes more sense?"

Yeah. Come bitch away here all you need to.
