I keep a journal. No, not this online thing - a real book, with real handwriting in it, bound and with the entries dated. Mostly, it's for me and my own entertainment but there's always a bit of awareness that someday when I'm gone to ashes someone else will read them and see what transpires in the life of a housewife of the 1980s - whatevers. I write about my kids, my husband, my thoughts... and about what has happened in the world that is notable to me at the time. Sometimes I re-read them after a few years. I wonder what happened to that woman in Aftghanistan who was buried alive for 70 days and then rescued? Did she ever regain the ability to talk or relate with people?

Maybe it is the geek in me but I really think that stuff like this enhances understanding - of myself, when I re-read it, and of 'the times' when sometime down the line someone else might. (I'm severely doubting that my kids would ever be interested but their kids might. Our ignorance about LIfe 60 Years ago is far more compelling when we are young.)
