I am dyeing fabric in my washing machine for the second time in my whole life, the first time being around 1990. Lord Above, please to not let me destroy my washing machine. I am following all the instructions and plan on washing a whole pile of Arn's "woodworking rags" after the fabric is removed and the second (empty) run of the washer is through.

The first time I tried this, it came out streaky. I hope it does better this time. I'm using Rit (I know, I know) and if this actually comes out well enough to work for a pair of Viking-era trous, I will consider upgrading to real dye for some other project.

For you Mongol-types (or anyone else who wears a scarf around your waist), Target has some scarves of rayon in stock, $12.99 each, with a motif that is wonderfully correct "paisley". They fit around my waist and tie, so they're really long. Here is a not-so-great really-washed-out cellphone photo:
