Appealing to the work-out LJ Brain Trust
Jun. 17th, 2009 10:37 pmOkay, so you know that I've been doofing around at the gym (added two new machines to my workout today - fun!) I have a question I forgot to ask my cheerleader trainer today.
I'm confused, a bit, about frequency of workout. Yesterday when I finished with my upper-body playtime my arms really hurt in a couple of places. Through the night and into today, that ache didn't really leave and I went and worked out again, even though I couldn't do as many reps (10 vs 15 per 3-cycle) because it just was too tired and sore.
I remember two views of this. One says, "The best cure for what makes you sore is to do it some more." The other says, "Fatigue acid has to work out of the system so it is better if you alternate working sets of muscles so you don't work the same set every day."
So which is most true? Or is it a case of the first one being more true for woobly-out-of-shape housewives and desk jockies while the second one is more true for dedicated body builders?
I mean, since I am definitely* sore just about all over today, do I go back and do the same thing again (weight training), or do I go back and just play on the rowing machine tomorrow? Which will speed the demise of "Arg! I've been sewing for an hour and now I can't straighten my arm back out! Sore! And don't ask me to stand up from this chair - my thighs might seize and I'll neverwalk again! Feel the effect of the mighty Exercise Ghods!"

*Just for you, Izzy, I consulted a dictionary. :)
