Aug. 31st, 2009 09:44 pmOMG - I'm stuffed. Arn treated my 'car repair shock' with a trip to a little mom & pop place we'd been meaning to try... the owners are from Italy, the cook from the Pompeii area, the food, well, I did mention that I'm stuffed, right? The first thing to hit us as we opened the door was the smell of fresh garlic sauteed in butter. Followed by an undercurrent of freshly baked bread...
Yum. We need to take our friends there. :)
Sticker shock hit when the dealership called me back. $2700+ for repairs. Then, after deciphering what they were saying, it turned out to be far less. I mean, ultimately, all that has to be done but very little of it is dire. What went wrong with it on Friday was leakage in the vacuum* hoses. So that needs to be repaired or the vehicle won't run. (I had to have it towed this morning after all.) But everything else was the standard "routine" or "basic upkeep" sort of stuff you'd expect of a ten year old car that is driven daily. I can get it done a little at a time.
As for SCA clothing... I can't decide what to make for Barnacled Bullfrog. It IS a tavern and I would be the tavern-keeper/owner. So it seems that I ought to have something middle-class or slightly lower, and something, um, less-than-respectable but still acceptable for a middle-aged woman. And since it is not tied to any one place or culture, that puts me in a bind. Should I make the Turkish-Venetian robe that I've been meaning to make to replace my old one? That would mean that I didn't have to make a new chemise and that would be good. Or try my hand at Persian/Middle Eastern - I was quite inspired with the calf-length robes that have their fronts tucked up into the sashes at the waist, with those lovely bright linings. Or should I go with 'simple' and just make a nice and easy Venetian gown (I have a chemise that will 'do' although I don't really know how close to correct it is).
And once my car is repaired, I plan on checking out fabric stores for something silly to make into an apron. Or I should say, 'make into an apron if I choose to go the Venetian gown route'. I figure I can use the apron around the house for the holidays after the event, if I save out some fabric to make shoulder-straps for it. :)
*Why do I always want to spell that "vacumn"?
