Lady Melanie de la Tour guested with us for the weekend, coming down specifically to take part in the bardic competition at the Tir-Y-Don/Marinus* Inter-Baronial Twelfth Night. I'd worried that I was going to be a grumpy-guss after Zack leaving but instead the only real stress came from my sleep schedule - or lack thereof.

The event was quieter than it has been in the last couple of years, harkening back to 'the old days'... folks had time to exchange gifts, chat, even play extended board & card games - something we never seem to be able to do anymore at events. Lady Catalina's coffee shop was a welcome addition. All day I heard different folks say things along the lines of "I'll be right there but first I have to get a refill of ______" as they headed to the coffee bar. And the class on preparing for pennsic camping was a brilliant idea. Lack of sleep caught up with me during the feast so I was useless after the first course. Everyone else, though, had a riotous good time cleaning the kitchen - clean up in the Hall was more sedate.

The Horde had a pretty darn good time hanging out in the morning and afternoon. We don't often have many of us together so that was great!

Melanie caught her early bus-to-the-train-station (and hopefully went to sleep on it) while I stayed awake for a few more hours. Getting up at 5:45 was hard on both of us but I felt for her, knowing that she was going to have to transfer from the train to a plane in Richmond, then catch a cab from the airport in New York to finally get home. That is one determined lady! All in all, she was in transit for nearly 10 hours. Wow.

Sunday's card game was short, sweet, and crowded. Loved that. Loved the absorption on Lauren's face when we gave her Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Needlework. I can't believe they haven't re-published that. It is the very best instruction manual I know of for so many skills - I, a lefty, taught myself how to knit using that book; cabling and fair island techniques. My first project was a sweater for our little boy - and it looked like I'd knitted for years. And the section on embroidery! OMG!

After cards, I crashed. Hard. YAY!

*When we host it is the Marinus/Tir-Y-Don IB-12... makes me smile and reminds me of Mac & Tosh, the two really polite little chipmunks from Looney Tunes. I like them MUCH better than Chip & Dale.
