I just got a copy of "Spirit", a little magazine that the sisters who teach at my old school put out. It's an alumni thing, of course, but I love the trip down memory lane. This time they mentioned that the school has won recognition by the Siemens Foundation as one of the top programs in science, math, and technology nationwide.
You know, it doesn't surprise me.
It also had a very large section devoted to celebrating the life of Sister Mary Fidelis, who was the Mother Superior when I was a boarding student... she was so intimidating. Not in the stereotypical way, but through her presence, her humor and her extremely quick intellect. And one of the biggest, kindest hearts I had ever known. Right now, I'm enjoying thinking about her off on a new adventure. I can't say, "rest well" because, frankly, "rest" is not something that one can associate with her. Meeting new people, hugging them, bringing joy - I don't think she's stopped doing that just because she's left her earthly envelope behind.
Apropos of nothing - It is so mild outside that I went out and cut back my lantana, which I had neglected to do before winter (I knew it died off and then returned in the spring but didn't know that the dead wood would just sit there, mocking me, instead of falling on its own. What can I say? This whole gardening thing is new to me.) Anyway, I have learned that dry sticks of lantana are sheathed in tiny stickery teeth. Fragile tiny stickery teeth. Next year, I wear gloves. I can't even find the little ones embedded in my palms - but I can feel them!
