From a response on my support list when a wife reported the loss of her husband, one of our long-time members:
"I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of your husband. I am also exon-11, so am thankful to know that he was not in pain."

I am thankful that my cancer currently responds to the medication I'm taking. That I'm not looking down a dark alley at a hospice bed and tubes keeping me from pain like the writer of that response is.... we have the same exon-number, but my life could be so much darker - he is at the end of his journey and is taking notes, if you will, about what to expect. For me, now, worries about settling in to my new(ish) volunteer job effectively, getting holiday gifts together, dealing with the IRS, and watching TV with my husband generally take priority over worrying about my illness.

And you know, that's something that I don't stop to be thankful about until I read a letter like the one I just quoted.
