I'm watching a National Geographic episode about 'Inside the Vatican' (Yay Netflix! And Boo Netflix for not having The Help or Mr. Popper's Penguins available in streaming video) and it reminded me of one of our long-ago neighbors. She was from Scotland, with family scattered between that country and Ireland. Her uncle, a priest in Ireland, heard a last confession and almost ended up executed - the dying man had spoken in Gaelic, and the British authorities demanded that the priest tell them what the man had said. He refused (of course) and was arrested and tried for treason. Judged guilty, he was scheduled for execution.

Enter Michafiona and her family. Somehow, they got International attention (read: Senator Ted Kennedy) involved and a compromise was found. The priest was allowed to be under 'house arrest' in the Vatican. He was never to leave, under the direct supervision of his church.

I'm sure, nowadays, that his case has been revisited and he's fine. Not that living in theVatican could be bad! But I do wonder what happened with him. Michafiona moved years ago and we lost touch so I have no way of knowing.

[EDIT] Oh My God. I just saw the Vatican's tapestry-restoration lab's collection of thread. I am so totally in lust... "The lab can  boast a library containing more than 6,000 shades of thread..." *swoon*
