The popcorn diet
Apr. 25th, 2006 06:46 pmI love to eat while I read. It's a habit almost as old as I am (I believe it set in when I was 6. At 49, those first few years don't seem all that significant.) I broke that habit once or twice in my life when my weight became a concern but it always reasserts itself and I've come to terms with that. So I found - - popcorn. Yup. Found it a long time ago but just re-discovered the advantages of it for folks like me. There's a lot - A LOT - of bulk in popcorn. It fills you up quite nicely. Prepared on the stove in the manner I use, there's very few calories. 10 cups of popcorn = 310 (popcorn) + 120 (cooking oil) calories, some of which are lost because I pour it all into an absorbent grocery bag before I salt it. It's kinda fun to watch the sides of the bag get oil stains and know that those calories are 'gifties' that I won't be eating. Can we say that 10 cups of popcorn makes for a lot of snacking? Yes, we can. And in the week that I've switched to that for my evening reading, I've lost 2 pounds. Not much on the grand scale, but since it's the only change in my routine, I like it.
Rediscovering how nice it is to munch celery isn't bad, either. Even if I do occasionally add some pimento cheese to one or two of the stalks. Yum. I bring Arn a couple with peanut butter and that's dinner, pretty much, for us... sometimes, you want to eat in the evening, and sometimes you don't. Yeah, I know it's not real balanced but neither is it 'common'.
And it beats chips and dip.
(And having taken this break, it's back to spelunking the Caves of Fabric in the hopes that I can find something to turn into pants & tunic for this weekend. low 60s with a 30-40% chance of rain? In the mountains? I know what that means... foggy dew. No skirts for me, thank you!) (Besides, I need an extra pair of trous for Pennsic and the tunic can go to the ever-hungry Gold Key afterwards.)
