I have admin work to do and a pot of broth on the stove to be turned into gumbo... and I'm about to grab The Riddlemaster of Hed and settle down for some re-reading before going to bed. This is that time of night when my thinking brain slows its synapses to cold molasses speed and it is nearly impossible for me to accomplish anything in a coherent manner. ("Well hey," you say, "You seem to be typing just fine." "If you were to time me, and to watch how often I do a google-search for 'online dictionary', you might change your mind about that.")

Tomorrow should be entertaining. We've friends coming over for cards... that sounds so - - old - - but it's not really. We're not sitting around a table politely and quietly holding cards in our hands, barely moving. We play a couple of mean 14th/15th century games that make "Spades" and "Hearts" seem like "Old Maid", and then we segue on to a modern one, which is the favourite of one of our players. In fact, she loves it so much, and talks us into playing it so often, that I had to go purchase a new deck as the old one was getting grey and dog-eared. It is called "Five Crowns", in case you are curious. I tried to get them interested in playing "Quiddler", which involves spelling words, but that was a bust. Darn it. I miss that game. I shall bring it with me to the hotel for Kingdom Twelfth Night and see if I can scare up some players there. The last time I did that, we played in the lobby (in an ever-changing arrangement of players) until about three in the morning. So I have hope.

The cold front/storm pretty much passed us by. The temperatures dipped into the 20s at night, and topped out in the 40s during the days but outside of a steady wind we didn't see much that was annoying. No snow. Only enough ice to tap lightly on one's face and then melt when it hit the ground. All the deciduous trees, however, got the hint and we've been experiencing leaf-blizzard conditions. THAT is annoying. The leaves build up on the curbs and dam the runoff water, creating large cold pools in the road. You risk your toes going to the mailbox. (Mostly because people in this area don't really pay any attention to the dangers of wet feet in cold weather, or bother drying off their shoes and feet when they get into their houses. The Japanese practise of house slippers would be a good one to import to this area.)

I spent about a week of steadily filling out holiday cards to mail to friends. I love doing that. It was noticeable that I've gotten out of practise of writing by hand, though. I was slower on the job and took more breaks to rest my hand than last year. Those muscles fatigued early! I need to get back to writing in my journal, or something.

And I've been sleeping about 10-14 hours a day for the last week. I don't know why - the clogged ears are beginning to clear (I can hear again! After I've been upright for a couple of hours) so you'd think I'd be more comfortable and more rested, recovering, instead of heavily exhausted after four hours of being awake.
