This is one of the least stressful Thanksgiving for me. Half of my menu is being brought over to the house by the rest of the family so I have the time to easily roast the turkey and to make the fun stuff - savoury toasted cheese, cranberry sauce, a "pecan butter pie" made with pecan butter because the person who loves regular pecan pies cannot eat nuts any longer. It is an experiment. If it fails I'll tell him to buy a tub of vanilla ice cream and heat the pie ingredients up in the microwave to make a tasty topping. We can always throw out the piped-decoration pecan butter bits.

I got ambitious last weekend and pulled out a roast to cut up for beef soup, then didn't actually start the project until this evening. So the broth with the meat and onions is going into the freezer this evening to make room in the fridge for the rest of the Thanksgiving menu items. Which reminds me. I need to eat that package of strawberries tonight. The turkey goes in that area tomorrow before roasting.

For the first time in my life, I have tried eating Asian Pears. My goodness, what I've been missing! They make a great 'bridge' between sick-of-apples and oranges-aren't-in-yet. Blackberries have gone back up in price, as have raspberries so the fruit drawer looks a bit empty. Or it did, until I bought more pears.

I tried cooking brats & sauerkraut in the slow cooker. It worked but was not a success - the kraut tasted very good, as it was not too vinegary (I tried a brand from Whole Foods that is refrigerated) but the brats were, well, soggy. I am not encouraged to try again. But I will be buying more of that sauerkraut.

In the SCA, my year of being a Deputy Mayor for Pennsic is officially over. I have no staff job next year so am eyeing the calendar and dreaming of University classes. And visiting friends' camps. And maybe buying a few bottles of cider and perry to enjoy in camp. It is difficult to change my view of the event - being a relaxed camper is unfamiliar.

I've also volunteered to be the barony's deputy Minister of Arts & Sciences. Our warranted one just had an infant under difficult conditions and already has a two-year-old. Right now neither child is sleeping and her husband is out to sea, so she's just plain exhausted. I'll do the grunt work for her and let her being involved in planning only as much as she wants to be. It's been easy so far. I've gotten the weekly class schedules filled through the end of the year and we are building January & February's schedules now.

I LOVE those Asian pears! Always have.

I will be curious to hear a report on how that pecan butter pie goes (with the recipe in addition to the evaluation, as then it is easier to understand your description based on what you put in it). I never thought of using nut butter of any sort in a pie, though given the frequency with which I add almond meal to just about everything, perhaps I should have.
