Help with LJ?

Is there anyone out there who can explain to a computer-dummy how to write that HTML code so my whole friggin' entry isn't showing up on my friend's pages but instead I can have a shorty-note and a link to the "probably boring" parts? I'm feeling guilty... signed, too verbose
